Youth Coming Together
Every teen as soon as they hear the word spring break or vacation what do they automatically think? That’s easy going away or hanging out with their friends and close ones. To tell you the truth that’s not true over the vacation almost 100 youth from the ages of 12- 17 gathered and spent 3 days from their vacation in a retreat. Hard to believe I guess you can think that. Even though youth and teens these days got through rough times in their life who says that coming to church can’t help them and witness that other kids go through problems too. At the church of St. Philip Neri these teens came to deal with their problems but to also to celebrate the rising of Jesus. Over the vacation I spent 3 days as a youth leader for a Lenten Retreat that my church has been doing for almost 3 years. I would never have thought or dreamed in my life that I would be helping other teens deal with their problems or even just being in a church atmosphere. For those of you who don’t know what a retreat is, it is a weekend where people go away to help better themselves and also witness testimonies from adults or sometimes even teenagers of what they have gone through in their life and what they did to turn it around. During the weekend I thought that it was just going to be crazy even though it was a little bit, but also that the youth that we had there were not going to take it as serious as other retreats that we have done. The reason for this thought coming in to my mind was because this time we were dealing with very young kids and just not mentally prepared for something so serious and deep in thought. Learning though from past experiences you can’t just look at the negative and you have to have faith a large amount of it at that. Of course there were kids that did not get what exactly they were there for or what was going on but at the end it hit them. I always thought that it was impossible for kids at such a young age to be going through serious problems but that was a wrong prediction. Over these days we spent it in a school and participated in events with the church community and were just the main focus when we were attending mass and any other event. The older crowd of our church were just amazed at what was going on and thought it was great to see so much youth be a part of the church just because they are used to seeing the out the street or think that all we do is cause trouble. To be honest this would be the best vacation ever in my opinion because it feels great to know you are doing good and helping others. We can sometimes just think that we can’t do anything to help kids our age or younger but you just have to try and believe in your ability to strengthen others faith and belief in them selves. Knowing that you are doing good for others can make you feel a ton better and also to show to adults that we can make a difference and we are also called to do good and not only cause bad to others and the world.
